I have finished Gone Girl and the ending wasn’t what I expected it to be, let me explain. What I revealed in my last blog post was that Amy staged her kidnapping! After she explained how she did it and why we were caught up on what she was doing after she was robbed and exposed for who she was, she finally made a plan to return home. After looking back on what she did she realized all she wanted to do was return to Nick, but she needed help. Now, this is where the book took a turn for me. In my earlier blog posts, I mentioned Amy’s old boyfriend who she claimed stalks her, Desi. Desi came to the rescue when Amy made an anonymous call and they were finally reunited. Amy didn’t call Desi for his help but only for her to turn the tables of her entire ruse to make Desi the real villain. After manipulating Desi, Amy was living with him and ended up becoming involved with him only to stab him in the back. After leaving the house, she came back home to Nick, literally. She went home and knocked on the door. Nick was in disbelief when she finally came back knowing she planned to frame Nick. She ended up convincing the police she was kidnapped by Desi and was kept hidden at his house but surprise! Amy killed Desi before she left his house. It was smart on her part but her plan fell apart and it was entertaining to see what she was going to do next. The police immediately dismissed the case with the conclusion Amy was kidnapped by Desi and Amy was excited to return home with Nick and act as nothing happened, but Nick was the opposite. They never got things back to normal no matter how desperate Amy was, so she took things into her own hands. She was pregnant (for real this time)! Fast forward a year and they are still together, delivering the baby! Nick's final line to Amy regarding him staying with her was, “Because I feel sorry for you”. I think this was a perfect ending line because after all Amy has done, Nick got the final word.

I am going, to be honest, I am not very interested in this book, but, a lot has been uncovered so I will catch you up. For starters, Amy isn’t dead! Throughout the novel, we have been reading from Nicks's point of view and reading excerpts from Amy’s diary. After revealing Amy is alive, we now get to read the story from Amy and Nick's present perspective. It was hard to come up with theories for this story because it is constantly twisting and turning but the one thing I did predict, Amy staged her kidnapping herself! Amy has revealed herself as not being “Amy” at all but a fake version of herself she used to attract Nick, become friends with her neighbors and be the perfect golden woman, etc. Amy reveals her plan, where she is now, and why she did it in the first place. Don’t get me wrong this was a big reveal but it seemed a bit predictable, so I was looking forward to what was to come. Back to Nick's story, he was thinking more and more about why Amy would ever be kidnapped, but then it clicked for him. The anniversary clues Amy has been leaving for him and the loopholes of the case. Nick was being framed for Amy’s disappearance, by Amy! He couldn’t believe it at first but he realized the clues Amy was leaving was never about their relationship, it was about Nick’s (not so secret) affair! He has underestimated Amy her whole life and this must be her way of showing him her true self. Having more information about the characters and the way their minds work is making them more dislikeable. I find it easier to read a book when I have a connection with the characters but knowing more and more about them it’s hard to connect with them.
Blog post number 2! I’ve gotten to read more of Gone Girl lately and I can’t put it down! In my last post I didn’t talk about the characters as much, so I will give an introduction now! There are a few main characters we have been introduced to. Nick Dunne, he is the main character of this novel and is married to his wife, Amy Dunne. Nick has a twin sister named Margo I mentioned briefly in my first blog post. Nick loves his wife and his sister, but unfortunately they don’t get along well. They both like to be seen as the dominant one in the room, which makes their personality’s clash. There are also Amy’s parents Rand and Marybeth Elliot. Nick didn’t think they were close but once Amy disappeared, which I will talk about more in a minute, they have definitely become closer. Lastly, a suspect in Amy’s disappearance, an old friend who has a slight obsession with Amy, Desi Collings. Now that we are all caught up, let’s get into the story. Amy has finally been revealed to have been missing! I am going to be honest the book has felt a little slow but it is definitely picking up. Nick has been running around town like crazy trying to gather as much information about his wife’s disappearance since he doesn’t have the best relationship with the cops investigating. He has even gathered some friends and broke into the mall which is rumored to be the living area of the “Blue Book Boys”, men who have been laid off from their job at the local paper factory. After Nick and his friends break into the mall they discover Amy has been there! Doing what? Looking to purchase a gun! It makes the story even more confusing leaving us with more questions! On top of all this, Nick is participating in the scavenger hunt his wife plans for him every anniversary but isn’t telling the cops about it. There is something new going on every page. I can't put the book down!
My first impression of the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn has been very good so far! It has been very interesting and easy to read since the story is interesting and I can make many personal connections with the novel! Although this is a mystery thriller novel, it has been very lighthearted so far. The main character, Nick, and his twin sister, Margo remind me of my relationships with my siblings. Nick and Margo are twins and I am a twin as well! They are both very open with each other and they run a business together! I joke with my siblings sometimes about how we can open restaurants or how we should become famous and Nick and Margo talk about their dreams as well. They also have a lot of inside jokes and are movie buffs. They own a bar called “The Bar”, good name right? Margo says it’s a perfect name just like how Aubrey Hepburn named her cat “cat” in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. I was excited reading that line because I am a big fan of Aubrey Hepburn! I even have a cat whose name is “cat”! I find it easy to read a book when you can connect with it using personal experiences. Speaking of personal experiences, the book has a lot of different locations, Nick and his wife, Amy’s house, Nick and Margo’s Bar, and where Nick and Amy are currently living, Missouri. The book is descriptive enough for me to picture these places in my head which makes it easier for me to read. When I read I tend to picture what is happening in my head. The places they go are described similarly to places I have gone to before. Nick and Amy’s house has a window looking out on the water and it reminds me of a window I had in my old house that had a view of a stream in our backyard. Margo and Nick’s bar is very similar to a restaurant where we held a birthday for my Dad!
